There are many vantage points to view Sydney’s New Year's Eve celebrations on Sydney Harbour. At midnight, Sydney becomes the New Year’s Eve capital of the world with fireworks exploding in awesome unison from the Sydney Harbour Bridge as well as seven (!) gigantic barges moored at different parts of the harbour from Cockatoo Island in the west to just off Point Piper in the east.
This awesome display can be seen from all vantage points on the harbour, from the Gladesville Bridge to the *Heads (*The entrance to Sydney Harbour), and especially from the special viewing section on the Sydney Opera House steps (a prime position - but you will need to be there at least 18-24 (!) hours prior to stake out your spot!)Public transport is the preferred mode of transport. The viewing areas are generally (depending on the size/area/accessibility) well serviced by food and drink facilities. Alcohol can be consumed and/or purchased at some viewing areas but not at all viewing areas. Drinking glasses and glass bottles are banned at ALL viewing areas.
The map below is the actual map from the official City of Sydney New Years Eve web site. - It is linked directly to their web site which shows all the major viewing and surrounds around Sydney Harbour which you can view the display from. Note that not all the locations are free of charge and also have varying degrees of accessibility. It is NOT advisable to bring a car into the city as not only is parking costly (if you can find anywhere to park) the city is also absolutely jam packed on the night and most streets are taken over by pedestrians.
Below is a short list of some of the best hotels from which to view the fireworks - Contact us to discuss the best hotel for your budget and your booking - but - make sure when booking you have a harbour side facing room view- and yes - it is much more expensive than a non harbour view room! Of course - if you can wangle it - the best place is on the actual harbour itself - on a yacht with your friends and a couple of bottle of fine champagne! (We can arrange that too!)
A good map of the Harbour and vantage points is shown below. However we suggest you visit the official City of Sydney New Years Eve web site. It’s a great site with interactive links to Google Maps, vantage points, toilets, best places to watch the fireworks from & other great features.
