Our ‘Rainforest, Reef and Outback’ itinerary below is an example of what we think constitutes a unique ‘mini itinerary’ that showcases some of the best things to do in Australia - and that we have also done ourselves! It is an ‘off the beaten track’ suggestion that can either form the central ‘nucleus’ of your visit or be included in your overall itinerary taking in other wonderful places to see and go within Australia.
Australia is a big - make that a HUGE country, and it would take many many visits to even start to get familiar with all that it has to offer. Our experience has shown us that everyone has different expectations of what is required in the way of accommodation standards and inclusions, touring, transfers, dining and sightseeing to name a few. We take immense pride in our Australian heritage and our product knowledge to build your perfect holiday itinerary for Australia.
Our unique Rainforest, Reef and Outback does what it says on the tin! Really! It includes a 4 night Great Barrier Reef cruise onboard the boutique cruise operator Coral Princess Cruises from Cairns to fabulous Lizard Island and return. Beautifully appointed, modern shallow draft vessels with just a maximum of 50 passengers in total ensure a magical, wonderful Great Barrier Reef cruise experience!
From here we transfer to the boutique resort village of Port Douglas for 3 nights. This stunning tropical gem has one of the best concentration of food and dining experiences in Australia (if not the world!) along with superb accommodation choices, and is the closest township to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest nearby. ’Port’ is a great place to just relax and soak up the atmosphere - or as a base for lots of exciting things to do in the area. Don’t forget to allow a day on Ports own fabulous 4 Mile Beach.
From Port Douglas transfer to the luxury boutique Silky Oaks Lodge and Spa for the next 2 nights.
Silky Oaks is a 20 minutes drive from Port Douglas and is on the Mossman River in the nearby Daintree Rainforest. Accommodation is in either Tree Houses or River Houses, according to your budget and taste. Silky Oaks is one of Australia’s (and the worlds) best known eco-lodges and is an amazing experience of tranquility and relaxation in itself. The restaurant is exceptional, as are the activities that the resort offers. After your stay at Silky Oaks we transfer you back to Cairns for your onward flights or to your next destination. This overall itinerary can be reversed or changed around to suit.
Day 1. Weather permitting you take the famous 4WD Bloomfield Track drive from Port Douglas up to the VERY laid back (but amazing!) township of Cooktown, a distance of about 230 kilometres, hugging the coastline through the ancient Daintree rainforest on one side of the road and the Coral Sea on the other side. It should take about 6-7 hours drive taking it easy and stopping for lunch en route. Stay the night in Cooktown.
Day 2. Return the next morning via the fully sealed inland Mulligan and Kennedy highways via Kuranda to Cairns for your overnight accommodation. This is about a 330 kilometres easy drive and takes about 6 hours allowing for meals and rest breaks as well as scenic stops. The inland route is a huge contrast to the amazing rainforest drive of the Bloomfield Track
The Bloomfield Track drive is ‘Boys (add Girls!) Own Stuff’ as the ‘Track’ is rated as a ‘medium level 4WD experience’ drive - however in the wet season (November-April) it is ONLY for VERY experienced 4WD drivers and often closed for weeks at a time. We have done this drive many times having lived in Port Douglas for 9 years and would rate it as one of the most amazing drives in the world.
Day 3.Today its off to another incredible hidden gem of an experience in this amazing wonderful part of the world - The Undara Lava Tubes, 275 kilometres south west of Cairns and an easy 4 hour scenic drive on fully sealed roads. Overnight at Undarra you will stay in wonderfully restored old Railway Carriages (some with shared facilities). At Undara you will visit the Undara Lava Tubes, part of the longest lava flow from a single volcanic crater on Earth. In the Microbat breeding season you can also witness the unique spectacle of the Microbats and the Night Tigers.
Day 4 return to Cairns at a leisurely pace and drop your car off at the airport and board you aircraft for the next leg of your journey - or stay on in the area for some more relaxation. This suggested itinerary is something you wont find with any other UK operator to Australia - it’s different, its fun, and we have first hand experience on this one!
Note: This itinerary is provided as a guide: we can substitute/change this itinerary to include different destinations, resorts, accommodation options and tour(s), rental car, 4WD or campervan - we have literally thousands of options to chose from... so - PLEASE ASK US!
