Holiday Australia: Australian Slang: Australia-English Dictionary

Aussie English – as she it is spoke.. spake.. spoken... bugger it…mangled..!

Editors Note:
Australian Slang is extremely colourful - indeed in some places it would be given an ‘R’ Rating! It is both a mixture of home grown phases and London cockney rhyming slang (e.g. china plate: ‘mate’) brought back to Australia by WW1 Diggers and early British immigrants. It can take some (ok – a lot!) of getting used to but certainly adds a lot of ‘colour’ to the language. Australians also tend to roll a string of words all together into the one sentence such as ‘howyagoinmate’ (how are you mate?) or 'waddayareckon' (what do you reckon?), ‘owyagoin’ (how are you going?) etc. - We hope you enjoy this rather extensive ‘Aussie dictionary!’

'There goes Bill the Bullocky,

Never drug a whip through dust.'
His team got bogged at the nine mile creek,
Bill lashed and swore and cried;
'If Nobby don't get me out of this,

But Nobby strained and broke the yoke,
And poked out the leader's eye;
Then the dog sat on the Tucker Box
